Phillip Island Attractions

When staying in Melbourne, Australia, consider taking some time out to visit the natural attractions of Phillip Island. Phillip Island is about 140 km or 90 minutes easy drive south-east of Melbourne on a map of Victoria. Phillip Island, Australia is known as a haven for many of Australia's native animals.

Perhaps the best known and loved wildlife event is the nightly parade of fairy penguins on Phillip Island. Each night at dusk, the Phillip Island penguins come out of the surf at Summerland Beach and waddle their way across the beach on their way to their burrows in the sand dunes. For a real experience, book one of only 5 spots per night in the Phillip Island penguin skybox - an elevated viewing tower above the beach, and assist the ranger in their penguin counts and research.

Melbourne weather can be variable so pack warm clothes if you are planning to watch the penguins.

During the day, you can cruise past the largest colony of fur seals in Australia at Seal Rocks or see koalas in their native habitat at the Koala Conservation Centre. You can also pick up a fishing charter leaving from Cowes, Newhaven, San Remo or Rhyll.

Animals are not the only attraction on the island. The Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit hosts the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix as well as numerous other Superbike and world touring car championships. Take a guided circuit tour into the restricted areas including pit lane, the control tower and of course, have your photo taken on the winners' podium.

Regular tours to the area leave from selected Melbourne hotels and the main transit centres in Melbourne Victoria.
